Aunt Nan & Amy, February 2003

Anna Sise Feeley Voigt, "Nan," was called home April 10, 2008, at the age of 92. She had just realized her goal of returning from a hospital stay to Rockland Place, her residence for the past seven years.

Nan was born in 1916 in Boston, Mass., to the late Edward M. and Elizabeth C. S. Feeley. She graduated with a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin in 1937 where she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, and with a B.S. from Simmons College (Boston) in 1938. She worked at Dartmouth College before marrying Henry K. ("Hank") Voigt in 1941 and embarking on their 62 years of married life. They moved several times during and after World War II before settling in New Castle, Del., in 1951. Nan was a dedicated homemaker and did substitute teaching in the New Castle Special School District.

Nurturing her love for birds, flowers, and trees was a lifelong pursuit. Nan was a founding member of Hagley Associates and a Hagley Museum volunteer. She and Hank were members of Immanuel-on-the-Green Episcopal Church in New Castle, and later of St. Mary's Anglican Church in Wilmington. Nan devoted many volunteer hours to the Republican Party in Delaware, and to her correspondence with family and friends in many states and literally around the world, from England to Australia.

Nan and Hank enjoyed numerous hobbies including travel, family history, and building a retirement log home near Danville, where they attended many a country auction and endlessly explored back roads. Nan thoroughly documented her life and especially her trips to the British Isles, Europe and Australia with diary entries, scrapbooks and albums. She was fascinated with her family heritage, which included New England ancestors who were active in religion and politics in colonial times, and who experienced the French and Indian Wars and the Revolution of 1776.

Nan was preceded in death by her husband Hank Voigt, who died in 2004. She will be missed by her four children and their spouses, Karl and Carol Voigt of Newark, Elizabeth ("Cammie") and Michael Cairns of Greenville, Diana and Greg Hayden of Tampa, Fla., and Edward and Karen Voigt of Ephrata, Pa.; and by 12 grandchildren Megan McIntyre and her husband John, Eric Voigt and his wife Lisa, Jason Voigt and his wife Abbe, Lauren Riale and her husband Richard, and Cecily and Adriana Cairns, Matthew, Kevin and Amanda Hayden, and Julie, Caitlin and Erica Voigt. Nan is also survived by eight great-grandchildren Lydia, Madeline, Emma, Ellen, Adam, Griffin, William and Aimee, and by her best friend and sister-in-law, Amy Voigt of Fairfax, Va.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16, at the Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, where friends may call at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hagley Museum, PO Box 3630, Wilmington, DE 19807 or to the Delaware Association for the Blind, 800 West St, Wilmington, DE 19801.
